Walmart has recalled nearly 10,000 cases of apple juice in 25 states over high arsenic levelshttps://ift.tt/rWY4GycA truck semitrailer with Walmart's logo on a US highway.NurPhoto/Getty ImagesWalmart has recalled 9,535 cases of apple juice due to high arsenic levels. The recall affects the "Great Value" apple juices from beverage manufacturer Refresco.FDA raised the recall urgency to Class II, indicating that it may cause adverse health effects.Walmart has recalled nearly 10,000 cases of apple juice after its supplier discovered that the product contained higher-than-accepted levels of arsenic, a toxic substance.Refresco, which produces the "Great Value" brand 8-ounce apple juice bottles sold in Walmart, voluntarily recalled 9,535 cases of the product in 25 states across the country, the Associated Press reported.A Food and Drug Administration Authority (FDA)noticesaid that the 8-ounce, six-pack cases of apple juice were to be recalled because the product "contains inorganic arsenic above action level set in industry guidance."The authority had issued a recall notice on August 15 but bumped the risk level to a more urgent Class II category on Friday. A Class II risk means that the product "may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences."However, the risk category also states that there is a remote possibility of "serious adverse health consequences" from consuming the product.Prolonged exposure to inorganic arsenic can cause skin disorders and could increase risks for skin, bladder, and lung cancers, as well as for cardiovascular disease, per the FDA."The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority," Walmart spokesperson Molly Blakeman said in a statement to the AP. "We have removed this product from our impacted stores and are working with the supplier to investigate."In July, Wiers Farm of Ohiorecalled productssold in some Walmart stores, like salad cucumbers, bell peppers, and green beans, due topotential Listeria contamination. And in June, ice cream cakes from restaurant chain Friendly's were pulled from Walmart's shelves, also because of potential Listeria contamination.Representatives for Refresco and Walmart did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider sent outside regular business hours.Read the original article on Business InsiderBusiness Newsvia Business Insider https://ift.tt/sFmLD81August 25, 2024 at 11:00PM

Regulatory Alert!Today, while exploring the different recalled products, I found very important information of Palmer candy!Walmart, Target, Dollar General recalling candy potentially contaminated with Salmonella FDA has declared a “severe” recall of white-coated confectionery products from Palmer Candy Co.A voluntary candy recall issued back in May has now been elevated to a Class I recall, the most severe issued by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Palmer Candy Co. out of Sioux City, Iowa, recalled its white-coated confectionery items on May 5 because they had the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The product comes in a variety of retail packaging like bags, pouches, and tubs.Related: Walmart stands alone in Q2 online grocery salesThe candy was distributed to Walmart, Hy-Vee, Target, Dollar General, and to distributors in Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. So far no illnesses have been reported. Related: Target set to leave California cityPalmer Candy was notified by its liquid coating supplier that there was a potential for contamination from an ingredient that was potentially contaminated from one of their suppliers. Production of the product was suspended back in May while the FDA and the company conducted an investigation. The FDA classifies the severity of recalls after they have been made and has three levels: Class I means consumption of the product can cause serious adverse health consequences or death; Class II happens when the suffering of serious adverse health consequences after consumption is remote, and the consequences are temporary or medically reversible; Class III indicates consumption of the recalled product is unlikely to cause any adverse health effects.https://lnkd.in/eBnJ86zK

Most Recent Update on Lead-Tainted Kids’ Cinnamon Applesauce Brands Recall!!!On November 9, 2023, Wanabana LLC issued their expanded recall announcement to include information on recalled Schnucks and Weis cinnamon applesauce pouches, which also impacts markets outside of the United States. Retailers in the United States selling the tainted products include Amazon, Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, Schnucks and Eatwell Markets grocery stores and Weis grocery stores.A current update was released on February 6, 2024. As of February 2, CDC has received reports of 100 confirmed cases, 277 probable cases, and 36 suspected cases for a total of 413 cases from 43 different states. Ecuadorian officials have reported that Carlos Aguilera of Ecuador was the processor of the ground cinnamon supplied by Negasmart to Austrofoods and later used in recalled apple cinnamon products and is the most likely source of contamination. Unfortunately, the FDA has limited authority over foreign ingredient suppliers who do not directly ship product to the U.S. This is because their food undergoes further manufacturing/processing prior to export. Thus, the FDA cannot take direct action with Negasmart or Carlos Aguilera. There is a more disturbing aspect to this story. It seems that the initial cinnamon sticks processed in Ecuador were sourced from Sri Lanka. Ecuadorian officials with the Agencia Nacional de Regulación, Control y Vigilancia Sanitaria (ARCSA) sampled the unprocessed cinnamon sticks from Sri Lanka and found no lead contamination. So, what does this mean?According to USA Today, the FDA reports that the applesauce pouches could have been contaminated intentionally. As reported to Politico by Jim Jones, the FDA’s deputy commissioner for human foods, the lead may have been added as “an intentional act on the part of someone in the supply chain.” NBC News reports that the FDA is investigating the act of adding lead-contaminated cinnamon as an act of “economically motivated food adulteration,” an act of food fraud that in this case, could result in lead poisoning from the contaminated cinnamon. This health crisis mostly impacts children. Symptoms of lead toxicity include headache, abdominal pain, vomiting, anemia, Irritability, lethargy, fatigue, muscle aches, difficulty concentrating, tremor, and weight loss. Parents are encouraged to seek immediate medical intervention in the event of these symptoms.#KidsSafetyFirst

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall for several brands of ground cinnamon due to elevated levels of lead contamination. While these brands of ground cinnamon have lower lead levels than the tainted cinnamon used in apple puree pouches, prolonged exposure to them may be unsafe and could contribute to elevated blood lead levels. Here are the brands affected:1. **La Fiesta**2. **Marcum**3. **MK**4. **Swad**5. **Supreme Tradition**6. **El Chilar**These products are sold at local and national retailers, including **Dollar Tree**, **Family Dollar**, **Patel Brothers**, and **Save A Lot**. The FDA recommends that consumers **discard** these ground cinnamon products to ensure safety. The contamination issue highlights the importance of monitoring food safety and being aware of product recalls⁵.Remember to stay informed about recalls and follow any guidance provided by health authorities. 🌟🔍Source: Conversation with Bing, 3/7/2024(1) Elevated lead found in six ground cinnamon spice brands, warns FDA .... https://lnkd.in/gNm9HsfA.(2) . https://lnkd.in/g5qVmagM.(3) Nationwide recall issued on multiple brands of ground cinnamon. https://lnkd.in/gZ4RhE6p.(4) FDA Issues Recall: Certain Ground Cinnamon Products Contain Lead. https://lnkd.in/gB6_t-WN.(5) FDA finds lead contamination in certain ground cinnamon products, asks manufacturers to voluntarily recall items. https://lnkd.in/gPCDiYW2.(6) These car manufacturers issued the most recalls in 2022. https://lnkd.in/g7gJaaiH.

"Would you like some lead with your meal? Say stop when you have enough."I had heard about lead in turmeric before and am careful where I buy that spice, but had not heard about cinnamon! And this appears to be in brands and store locations affecting my most at-risk patients -- like they need another hidden risk like this! Has anyone heard of additional spices to be wary of? I counsel patients to avoid salt and sugar all the time and to move over to spices like cinnamon, etc. To think that I need to counsel them on where they buy all spices too... Yikes.#obesity #healthylifestyle #healthylifestyles #mghhttps://lnkd.in/dPWB-vpd

Shelf life and expiry date are terms often used to describe the longevity and usability of products, particularly food, medications, and cosmetics. Here’s how they differ:1. Shelf Life: - Definition: Shelf life refers to the length of time a product remains usable, fit for consumption, or saleable, under specified storage conditions. - Usage: It's an indicator of how long a product can be stored before it starts to deteriorate in quality, flavor, or effectiveness. - Factors: Depends on various factors such as temperature, humidity, light, and packaging.2. Expiry Date: - Definition: The expiry date is the specific date after which a product is no longer considered safe to use or consume. - Usage: Indicates the end of the product's acceptable shelf life and suggests that the product should not be used beyond this date. - Legal Implications: Particularly critical for medications and perishable food items where using the product past this date can be harmful. In summary, while shelf life is a general duration of time for optimal use, the expiry date is the precise date after which the product should not be used.

Another example of claims based on the ingredient list. If an attorney reviews your claims make sure they understand what every ingredient in your product is and why that ingredient is in the product. Don't just ask the people in production or in the lab. An ingredient may perform several functions in a product. The lab may have not intend the ingredient to be a preservative. There could also be a combination of ingredients that act together as a preservative. The lab is not there to validate claims, they are there to formulate a product that delivers on marketing's direction. If your claim points to an ingredient the review needs to be extensive and dig deep into every single ingredient in that product.Gerber Hit With False Ad Suit Over 'No Preservatives' SnacksBy Dorothy Atkins (excerpt from today's Law 360)Two consumers hit Gerber with a proposed class action in New York federal court Tuesday alleging it falsely advertises its Yogurt Melts and Fruit & Veggies Melts as having "NO preservatives," even though the baby food snack products allegedly contain three well-known preservatives.

The #elevatedLead issue in applesauce. I am just wondering, if by now the source is quite clearly the #Cinnamon, what products are not being tested that might have that #LeadInCinammon issue. We know that retail spice bottles also contained lead in the cinnamon. #FDA #CinnamonWoes
