Is a 16L backpack big enough for school? ›

Under 10 liters: Slings and waist packs in this size work for everyday basics. 10 to 19 liters: For light loads and 13-inch laptops. 20 to 29 liters: Best for students and 15- to 16-inch laptops. 30 to 39 liters: For super-size workloads and weekend trips.

The standard backpack size for adults typically ranges from 20-30 liters in capacity. This translates to dimensions of approximately 18-20 inches in height, 12-14 inches in width, and 6-8 inches in depth. These sizes are versatile for daily use and can comfortably fit a variety of items.

Tight, narrow straps that dig into your shoulders can cause tingling, numbness, and weakness in your arms and hands. Carrying a heavy pack can make people more likely to fall, particularly on stairs or other places where the backpack puts the wearer off balance.

Trips of 5 days or more usually call for packs of 70 liters or more. These are also usually the preferred choice for winter treks lasting more than 1 night. (Larger packs can more comfortably accommodate extra clothing, a warmer sleeping bag and a 4-season tent, which typically includes extra poles.)

A 50L+ backpack is a great friend to those travelling for a few weeks. These bags are spacious and can accommodate a number of outfit changes before you ever have to visit a laundromat. But don't be tempted to fill your pack to its capacity before you've even left - remember to save space for souvenirs!

Pack Weight for Backpacking and Hiking

A loaded backpacking pack should not weigh more than about 20 percent of your body weight. (If you weigh 150 pounds, your pack should not exceed 30 pounds for backpacking.) A loaded day hiking pack should not weigh more than about 10 percent of your body weight.

Most guides will recommend backpacks in the 45L-55L range for one to three nights and 60L-75L for three to five nights. Some will go as far as to suggest 80L-100+L for trips longer than a week. I do NOT recommend anything larger than 60L for “normal” backpacking (see below for exceptions), regardless of length.

Doctors and physical therapists recommend that kids carry no more than 10% to 20% of their body weight in their packs. But many carry a lot more than that. The weight can pull a child backward, making them bend forward at the hips or arch the back to stay steady.

Limit backpack weight.

Overall, adults and children should not carry more than 15% of their body weight in a backpack. For example, the backpack for a 60-pound child should weigh less than nine pounds. Even when worn properly, your student may need to lean forward to compensate for extra backpack weight.

Concealing Contraband

While certainly not the overwhelming number of cases, such instances have led to some administrators banning backpacks to dissuade students from sneaking illegal and dangerous items onto school grounds.

A backpack with a capacity of 20-30 liters is usually a good choice for most high school students. This size should be large enough to carry their everyday items while still being comfortable to wear and not too bulky. Make sure their bags have enough space, but are not larger than necessary.

The Right Size

Choosing a backpack that is large enough to hold all school supplies but not too big to cause back or shoulder discomfort is crucial. Generally, a backpack with a capacity between 15 to 30 liters is recommended for high school students.

A bag that is 20-24 litres should always do the trick. However, children in their first three years of school won't require much more than a book bag. Bags should never be heavier than your child can handle. For students with a number of books to carry, we recommend backpacks with wide straps.

For a weekend getaway trip, a backpack with a capacity of 15 to 30 liters is typically sufficient. This size is perfect for packing clothes, a small toiletry bag, a water bottle, and a few travel-size essentials. You might also want to consider a backpack with multiple compartments for better organization.
